Doom - one of the greatest games ever, blew my socks clean off and I have yet to find them. Ever since Doom the FPS has been one of my favoured genres of gaming. Some of the more memorable ones (in no particular order):
Doom, Doom II, Final Doom
MoH's on the PSX
The Quakes (they MUST have had something because I completed at least the first 2)
Half Life (all of them)
And all the blaverage ones that also had time put in (Alien on the PSX etc)
(and any others you loved but I forgot)
CoD 2 and beyond
BF2:MC (STILL imo the greatest online MP experience ever)
Prey (fucking ACE under the radar game)
Numerous other ranging from blaverage to hideous (Hour of Victory anyone?)
(and any others you loved and I forgot)
I remember thinking the CoD2 single player campaign on Veteran was immense! A real feeling of hammer time yet as the series progressed (and I'm the first to admit, starting looking like the greatest graphical games ever) I started playing the campaigns less? The last CoDs I completed were CoD3 and 4 and neither of them on veteran. I've hardly touched the single player on MW and not at all on BFBC2 and haven't even bought WaW or black ops and probably wouldn't even at 2 for £20
The MP on CoD2 was also fucking out of this world (for me anyway) but in hindsight very basic and only 8 player LOL still a great doss with mates, again as the series moved on the MP gained much both technically and in options but lost something the more was added? I know that might just be my opinion. Bothe MW and CoD4 were a good doss but again only with mates and even then it always took a bit more of a serious tone with choppers of betrayal and airstrike of judasness.
Far Cry 2 sort of came out of nowhere with a SHIT campaign mode but the MP was proper raw and rip yo face off! It was great, once again it sort of went back to basics with minimal perks and weapon unlocks but some really well designed maps. I can see why a lot of the MW crowd would think 'just WTF is this shit, it's like playing on a commodore' after having the luxury of not having to be good at a game to learn the best class set ups and cheap tactics.
I'll just have a quick say about BFBC2, yes I rip it into puntohunboy because of his gaybot love for this game BUT I always say it is deffo the best attempt at and decent FPS MP since the mighty BF2:MC and I always enjoyed playing it when the RP crew were on. Good maps, goods vehicles, good comms essential, and NEARLY forgivable cheapness
After all of this and what I class as a definite slide into cheap 'sell at all costs' MP FPS games, I find myself not interested at all in FPS single player AT ALL and totally arsed off with the MP. Unfortunate when I think back to the greats like Half Life and Doom, games with secrets, unlocks, and REAL feeling of achievement when completing 100% or on the hardest setting (nightmare on doom anyone? Radar dish level on Goldeneye anyone?).
I also must add that maybe it's just grumpy old man syndrome? Maybe I really don't have the patience to grind through veteran levels anymore? Could the action RPGs have also played a role as well? The likes of Oblivion and Fallout 3 take my favourite genres and mix them tofuckingether!!! How can JUST an FPS compare after that?
However.........after looking into Crysis 2 I'm hoping it's this game that will get my FPS single player juices going. I want them back. End of. I'm going to MAKE Crysis (and later Rage) rape the FPS love into me I want that Doom feeling, that Bioshock story, those CoD 4 and MW graphics and my jove I'm going to get them!
So, is there a chance of me reclaiming my FPS love or to quote a classic Doom level will it be Redemption Denied?
